What is Surya Pongal? How long is this festival celebrated?

 Pongal festivals are celebrated in South, mainly in TN, like Makara Sankranti, Uttarayan, Lohri in other regions.

All festivals are related to movement of Sun.


TN gets mansoon rains by North East Mansoon from Sep till Dec. Unlike South West Mansoon in other regions.

So in TN, it has been celebrated as a harvesting festival in Jan.

With the arrival of new crops, the festivity arrives their home - with abundance of rice, sugarcane, spices etc. Traditionally there is a saying “Thai Pirandhal Vazhi Pirakkum”- There will be abundance after Thai Month.

On the first day of tamil month “Thai”, it starts with thanks giving of “Sun”called Thai or Surya Pongal; followed by worshipping “Bulls” next day called Mattu Pongal. Next day, they visit their relatives and friends called Kanum Pongal.

Schedule of 2021:

  • Bhogi Pongal: Wednesday, January 13.
  • Thai Pongal or Surya Pongal: Thursday, January 14.
  • Thai Pongal Sankranti moment is 8:29 AM.
  • Mattu Pongal: Friday, January 15.
  • Kaanum Pongal: Saturday, January 16.
